Exactly Like You
Singer and songwriter Greg Holden has earned recognition as an independent artist for the past several years, though he is perhaps best known for writing the massive hit “Home” — the debut single for American Idol winner Phillip Phillips that sold five million tracks in the U.S. and earned Holden an ASCAP Pop Award.
I am burnt out on hatred and in search of love. The bombardment of bullshit that has been this campaign has left me tired and in search of something unrelated. I am from the United Kingdom, so have no real stake in this election, except that I’ve lived in this great country for eight years, pay my taxes, and have no intention of leaving anytime soon. I love it here, and I know there is a huge amount of love in this wonderful country, but the general public is being denied access to it due to a constant barrage of hatred from Trump and everything that surrounds him. It’s exhausting and we all feel it, whether you’re American or not. I wrote this song from the perspective of an immigrant, or refugee. I wanted to consider how it must feel to be here right now, without your family, without familiarity, and while half of the country is turning on you.
I’m gonna sit here in the lions den Show no fear but I am scared to death Looks are exchanged, but I don't complain Because round here everybody knows my name But I’m no different, no I am exactly like you We are all humans, maybe just a little confused, So I won't blame you for the things that you say, But just so you know I'm not immune to all your hatred Because I am no different, no I am exactly like you Tensions rise as things get out of hand Why do you hate what you don’t understand This could be easy, this could be cool But it won’t work if you keep making up the rules Why do you hate what you don’t understand?
